ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES (Pills)

Oral contraceptives or pills are hormonal contraceptives taken by mouth. There are two groups:

Combined oral contraceptives (COCs);
Micro progestin pills (PMP).

Combined oral contraceptives (COCs)

These are birth control pills that contain two types of female hormones estrogen and progesterone.

The main advantages of combined oral contraceptives:

  • Regulate the menstrual cycle;
  • Reduce dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain);
  • Reduce the risk of anemia;
  • Allows the return to normal fertility upon stopping the pill;

Micro progestogen pills (PMP)

These are birth control pills made from the single female hormone progesterone.

The main advantages of micro progestogen pills (PMP):

  • Very effective if taken correctly every day and at the same time;
  • Used in case of contraindication to estrogen;
  • Reduce dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain);
  • Regulate the menstrual cycle;
  • Decrease the volume of periods and prevent the risk of anemia;
  • Return to normal fertility after stopping taking the pill;

Warning :
Oral contraceptives should be taken every day
Oral contraceptives do not protect against STIs
